We are interested in how people recognize faces. Participants will be asked to take part in an online test assessing their ability to differentiate faces of various levels of similarity.
Why should you participate?
There are no immediate benefits to you from participating in this experiment. Your participation, however, contributes to our understanding of how the human brain recognizes visual objects, and this knowledge can, in the long run, enable rehabilitation of dysfunction impacting visual recognition. If you are interested in receiving a copy of the final report, feel free to leave your email address in the online test and we will contact you when the study is completed.
You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:
- Are 19 years of age or older
- Have normal or corrected-to-normal vision (glasses/contact lenses)
- Note: Eligible participants may be placed in one of our experimental groups based on responses to our Social Exposure Survey, which measures experience with various image categories (e.g., bird experts) and must be completed before the beginning of the experiment.
You may not be eligible to participate if you:
- People with impaired vision that cannot be corrected through the use of glasses or contact lenses are excluded from the study because the proposed experiments measure visual recognition, thus requiring normal or corrected-to-normal vision.
- Note: If a participant does not qualify for a particular group (e.g., bird experts), or if that group’s target sample size has been reached, then we may not be able to recruit that participant at that point in time, even if they do not satisfy the exclusion criteria (i.e., even if they have normal or corrected-to-normal vision).
Time commitment: 1 to 1.5 hours
Compensation for participation: $10/hr in the form of a Canadian Amazon gift card.
This study will take place: Remotely via online survey, phone, or video call.
