Co-developing a smoking cessation intervention for people with SCI

Researcher(s): Dr. Heather Gainforth

SCI BC has partnered with Dr. Heather Gainforth, an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia Okanagan, to conduct a study to co-develop a smoking cessation intervention for people with spinal cord injury.

We are currently recruiting (a) people with SCI who currently or used to vape, smoke cigarettes, smoke marijuana, or use e-cigarettes or (b) staff from SCI BC to participate in a study. This study aims to develop a smoking cessation intervention for persons with SCI. If you choose to participate in this study, you will take part in an audio-recorded World Café that will last 3 hours. A World Café is a creative and social method for engaging people in conversations that matter. Before the event, you would complete a short 10-15 minute online survey to collect basic demographic information. During the World Café, we will ask for your input and feedback on a smoking cessation intervention for people with SCI that SCI BC will deliver. Your input will help ensure that the smoking cessation intervention is helpful and relevant to people with SCI.

Why should you participate in this study?

Participating in this research will allow you to share your input and feedback on a smoking cessation intervention for persons with SCI. Your participation will help to ensure that the smoking cessation intervention is helpful and relevant to people with SCI who are trying to stop smoking. Findings from this study will inform the development of a smoking cessation intervention for people with SCI that SCI BC will deliver. Additionally, by participating, you will learn about smoking cessation, which may help with your efforts to stop smoking.

You may be eligible to participate in this study if you meet one of the two criteria below:

  • Are over the age of 18, AND
  • Can read, speak, and understand English, AND
  • Have access to the internet, AND
  • Have a spinal cord injury that occurred more than 6-months ago, AND
  • Currently or used to vape, smoke cigarettes, smoke marijuana, or use e-cigarettes.

OR

  • Currently employed at SCI BC

You may be ineligible to participate in this study if you:

  • Cannot read, write, or orally communicate in English
  • Have been previously told that you have a cognitive or memory impairment

Time commitment

To participate in this study, you will complete one survey (approx. 15min) and participate in one meeting (approx. 3 hours). The World Café will be separated into three 50-minute sessions with two 10-minute breaks between sessions.

Compensation

The research team will cover all travel (e.g., airfare), accommodation (e.g., hotels), and other expenses you incur from participating in this study. For compensation, you will receive a $30.00 e-gift card to the retailer of your choice (e.g., Starbucks, Best Buy, Cineplex, Amazon, Superstore). Within three weeks of completing the survey and meeting, a member of the research team will email you your chosen gift card.

This study will take place at:
