Dr. Patricia Mills is the first recipient of the Adopt a Young Scientist Award!

Dr. Patricia Mills has been named as the first recipient of VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation’s Adopt a Young Scientist Award!

Dr. Mills is a physician scientist not only here at ICORD, but also at the GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre. With this award, she will be working to evaluate whether electrical stimulation of the brain can lead to improvements in blood pressure control in individuals with SCI.  Many people with SCI may experience blackouts from sitting up after being seated in a horizontal position; this can make it difficult for patients to engage in activities and exercise regimes that are needed to regain mobility and sensation. Through her research, Dr. Mills hopes to increase these individuals’ engagement in physical rehabilitation.

This award is aimed at providing young physician researchers seed funding in their goals to pave the way towards groundbreaking treatments that bridge between research and patient care.  TD Bank, as part of their TD Grants in Medical Excellence program, made a generous donation of  to the VCH & UBC Hospital Foundation, ensuring that new physician scientists, like Dr. Mills, will be able to benefit the health care community through their pioneering research.
